Thursday, June 1st, 1961: GL's #1 Starter is Santana
Which Gulf League hurler dominated in the month of May?
According to the voters who decide the Gulf League Pitcher of the Month award, it was Juan Santana of the Austin Senators.

He put together a record of 5-2 with an ERA of 1.45 in 7 starting assignments. In addition, he struck out 25 in 49.2 innings.

This season Santana has fanned 43 in 79.2 innings and collected a 6-5 record with a 2.71 ERA.
Monday, May 29th, 1961: García Sticks it to GL Pitchers
Like a battering ram, Juan García hit the baseball with brutal efficiency last week, gaining himself the Gulf League Player of the Week title for that stretch.

The Austin Senators catcher rapped out a .381 average with 8 hits in 21 at-bats, 2 home runs, 6 RBI and 3 runs scored.

García is hitting .303 this year with 10 home runs, 29 RBIs and 20 runs scored. He has 40 hits in 132 at-bats, 12 walks and a .356 on-base percentage. García has played in 35 games.
Sunday, May 14th, 1961: Kawai Humbles Austin
Toru Kawai was stingy with runs in his latest outing against the Senators. He shut them out 3-0 on 3 hits with 2 strikeouts and 1 walk.

The Galveston manager said, "Toru was very aggressive tonight. He threw everything he had with a lot of confidence."

The losing manager had praise, too. "He was throwing strikes with all his pitches and mixing it up well. Kawai has a sneaky fastball, and whatever that offspeed pitch was, it was keeping our timing off."

Thus far this season, Kawai has worked 41 innings with 14 strikeouts en route to a 1-3 record and a 4.17 ERA.
