What a week it was for Alvin Shaw! The Laredo third baseman took Rio Grande League Player of the Week honors after wearing out the pitchers with a .481 batting average in his recent games.
Shaw registered 13 hits in 27 at-bats as he cracked no home runs and drove in 4 runs.
A look at his 1961 stats shows Shaw with a .318 average, no home runs, 17 RBIs and 22 runs scored. He has played in 43 games. |
| Thursday, June 1st, 1961: Shaw Snares RGL Top Batter Award in May
Alvin Shaw, the Laredo Cowboys third baseman, certainly made his name known to Rio Grande League hurlers over the last month. He consistently introduced himself with hit after hit and came away with May's Rio Grande League Batter of the Month award.
He slashed and bashed his way to a .339 batting average while tallying up no home runs, 10 RBIs and 15 runs scored. He also worked RGL pitchers for 10 walks and a .393 on-base percentage.
This season Shaw has hit no home runs and posted a .317 batting average. |
 | Monday, May 15th, 1961: Johnson Gets 5 Hits
Earl Johnson of the Ideals was unstoppable in today's 9-5 victory over the Laredo Cowboys at Sain Park. He battered them for 5 hits in 5 at-bats.
"Boy, I was on the mark today," said the Alice left fielder after the game. "I could see the ball real well. It's a great feeling to do this. And besides, 5-5 won't hurt your batting average like 0-5 will."
E. Johnson singled in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.
This season Johnson is batting .380 with 14 RBIs, 16 runs scored and 1 home run. |
