| Breaking News | | Wednesday, June 28th, 1961: Super Swinger -- Guillén Slams 5 Hits After the Brantford 9-1 victory over Welland and his 5-hit day shortstop Ricardo Guillén told BNN beat writers, "It really doesn't matter whether it's sandlot ball, high school or college ball, two hits in a game is very good... three or four hits even better... 5 or more are out of sight... and if it is in pro ball... it is really something special. It will get you in the record books."
The 24-year-old player gained that distinction today at Gilkison Flats Park with a spectacular 5 for 5 game against the Welland Bridges.
The skipper of the Bells spoke glowingly of Guillén, telling BNN writers, "His swing is getting there. We want him to be quick with his swing, short and compact. We want him to be patient and go the other way when he can. Ricardo did that to perfection today."
R. Guillén singled in the 2nd, hit a two-run double in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off J. Unknown in the 9th.
Guillén currently has a .281 batting average with 25 hits, 2 homers, 11 RBIs, 16 runs scored and a .333 OBP. | | Thursday, June 8th, 1961: MacKinven Bangs out 5 Base Hits Markus MacKinven was on quite a roll today as he knocked the ball all over the park, collecting 5 hits and leading the Bridges to a 9-4 victory over the Port Credit Traders.
After the first three hits, all eyes in the ballpark were drawn to him each time he stepped into the batter's box. Even a few of the opposing fans were pulling for him, knowing they were watching a little baseball-hitting history unfold.
In the clubhouse, crowded by reporters, the Welland left fielder said, "I never realized that batting a little ball around could cause so much commotion." When asked what the secret of hitting so well is, he smiled and replied, "The key to hitting for a high average is to relax, concentrate and hit the ball where they ain't."
Nobody was at home today as MacKinven finished the day with 5 hits in 5 at-bats and a line in the record book.
M. MacKinven singled in the 1st, hit an RBI triple in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 7th and hit an RBI double in the 8th.
This season MacKinven is batting .286 with 8 home runs. | | Saturday, June 3rd, 1961: Buys Dominates Marshalls in Shutout In an impressive mound performance, Kjeld Buys of the Welland Bridges checked the Kitchener Marshalls on a 3-hitter and held them scoreless.
