"That's one thing that has never changed in this game -- pitching can control hitting," the Celts manager told reporters after today's game.
The Blue Sox ran into a buzzsaw as Phil Washington cut them down to size 6-0 with a 2-hit shutout.
His skipper added, "He knows exactly what he's doing. He's not going to throw you a good pitch until you make him throw one."
In the complete game whitewash the Uxbridge hurler doled out 2 walks and registered 6 strikeouts.
In the postgame press conference his catcher said, "Phil goes out there and just goes about his business. I don't think he gets too concerned about what's going on. You can call any pitch and you know where he's going to be."
Washington also got some praise from the Thornhill manager.
"He really kept us in check today. Everything looked to be moving. Seemed like the pitch was right down the middle and it went over down and away... we took some pathetic swings."
In 17 starts this season, Washington has recorded 7 wins and absorbed 5 losses. He has pitched 113 innings, allowed 119 hits, struck out 75 and has a 3.90 ERA. |

The Macdonald League has named its Top Player of the Week. The honor went to Anastasio López, left fielder of the Uxbridge Celts.
In an extraordinary hitting display, he belted out hits at a .500 pace to win the award. López went 12-24 for the week, totaled 5 home runs, 11 RBIs and scored 9 times.
López is swinging at a .323 pace on the year with 14 home runs, 39 RBIs and 26 runs scored. He has played in 45 games. |
