June's premier pitcher was Frank Ramsey of Oshawa Carriages. He pulverized Macdonald League hitters all month long and picked up the Pitcher of the Month award. The Carriages star hurler fashioned a 5-0 en route to the honor.
He had 16 strikeouts in 48.1 innings and compiled a 1.68 ERA. Other clubs hit .206 against him.
Up to now Ramsey has compiled an ERA of 1.79 with a 5-1 mark over 8 starts. He has 21 strikeouts in 55.1 innings and has held opponents to a .212 batting average. |
 | Friday, June 30th, 1961: Funk Slams 5 Hits for Oshawa
"It was like I was hitting little league pitching," said Mark Funk after his 5-hit performance against the Locks. "No offense meant to Peterborough, but it was like I was back in little league again. I could see the ball that well. But this wasn't a kid league park, it was Iroquois Park!"
The Oshawa second baseman had a fantastic day at the plate, knocking out 5 hits in 6 at-bats and pacing his club to a 8-0 victory.
His manager elaborated after the game to the press, saying, "Mark worked the entire offseason on trying to shorten his swing and stay inside the ball and the hard work is paying off in base hits."
"That's what I'm trying to do," Funk said. "Be quick to the ball and let it travel a little farther so I get a better look at it."
M. Funk singled in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, hit an RBI double in the 4th, grounded out in the 6th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 9th.
Currently Funk is hitting .229 and has collected no home runs, 9 RBIs and scored 10 times, while playing in 26 games. |
