Saturday, July 1st, 1961: Soriano Awarded June's LL Top Bat Prize
José Soriano really smoked the ball in June on his way to Batter of the Month honors in the Lincoln League.

The Los Angeles right fielder hit .344 with 13 home runs, 28 RBIs and 20 runs scored to round out his great month.

In 65 games Soriano is hitting .276 this season for the Quakes with 63 hits, 18 home runs, 45 RBIs, 18 walks, .328 OBP and has scored 34 runs.

Los Angeles has worked out terms of a deal to send 25-year old third baseman Rich Wooten and 19-year old minor league closer Shawn Johnson to Boston for 33-year old third baseman Bob Thompson and 20-year old minor league shortstop Leonard Davis. Both teams expect to introduce the players to their new teammates within a day or two.

In the 1961 season Wooten is hitting .183 with 7 home runs.

In 34 games this season Thompson is batting .241 with 21 hits and 2 home runs. He has scored 11 runs and driven in 8.

Not every ball that came off José Soriano's bat last week was a line drive or a towering shot -- it just seemed that way to the teams that played the Los Angeles Quakes. For his exploits, Soriano was named this week's Lincoln League Player of the Week award.

The Los Angeles right fielder put up 9 hits in 19 at-bats and 4 home runs while hitting .474 with 8 RBIs and 6 runs scored.

So far in 1961, Soriano is batting .285 with 14 home runs and 37 RBIs.
