Breaking News Monday, June 26th, 1961: Big Bat Bags RL Best Player Award The votes have been cast and counted and the winner of the Roosevelt League Player of the Week has been chosen. It was presented earlier today to Francisco Hernández for his red-hot week of hitting. The Los Angeles second baseman took home the trophy by splurging with 11 hits in 32 at-bats for a .344 batting average, driving in 11 runs and scoring 9 times. This season Hernández is swinging the bat at a .301 pace. He has hit 20 home runs and scored 49 times, while driving in 61. His on-base percentage is .355 and he has played in 64 games. Monday, June 19th, 1961: Moguls Starting Pitcher Injured It took the Los Angeles team doctor a while to realize it, but starting pitcher Miguel Garza won't simply play through a strained back muscle after he got hurt throwing a pitch in today's Rebels-Moguls game. At first, it looked like Garza might be back as early as tomorrow, but now the prognosis isn't quite so good; he's expected to miss at least 1-2 weeks. A spokesman for the club described the loss of Garza as a blow, but was confident that he'd be back soon. In 1961 Garza has compiled a 3-6 mark with a 6.15 ERA in 16 starts. Tuesday, May 30th, 1961: Hernández Hitless, Streak Ends at 20 The 20-game hitting streak of 26-year-old second baseman Francisco Hernández came to an end today at Goldman Stadium. The Dredgers held him hitless in 4 at-bats and also sent the Los Angeles Moguls down to defeat 4-0. So far this year Hernández is batting .314 with 13 home runs, 41 RBIs and 27 runs scored.
