Breaking News Monday, June 26th, 1961: Will Unhappy Watts Be Traded? In the latest churning of the rumor mill, reports indicate that 34-year-old reliever William Watts of the Atlanta Rebels could be on the trading block. While the player refused to comment, the team did not outright deny the claims. "If it'll help this team, we'll make a move," said one team official. Saturday, June 24th, 1961: Ouch! Emílio Varela Shelved by Injury The Rebels received bad news this morning. Emílio Varela will miss 2 weeks due to a fractured finger. In the Atlanta-Chicago game he sustained the injury while making a defensive play. "I'm disappointed more than anything," he told reporters later in the day. "You can't help your team on the bench," Varela sighed. "I'll do the rehab work and hope for a quick recovery." This year Varela is hitting at a .301 pace with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs. He has played in 61 games and scored 26 times. Wednesday, May 31st, 1961: Bad News for Atlanta, Nash Hurt Medical officials from the Atlanta Rebels reported that the club's 21-year-old starting pitcher, Bryan Nash, suffered dead arm syndrome in yesterday's matchup against the Cincinnati Rivermen while throwing a pitch.
